INDOORS
Sow in soilless compost in trays or small pots from April and maintain at a temperature of 25c. Cover with glass until germination takes place. Prick off into small pots when large enough to handle and reduce temperature to 20c. May be planted outside but not before mid-June.
OUTDOORS
Sow outside after mid-June. (Outside sowing is not advised in the North) Grow in a rich soil and water at midday when hot to allow the soil to dry before evening.

OUTDOORS

Sow a few seeds in any spare area for a quick crop. Sow small patches every few weeks, harvest when no bigger than your thumb. Water regularly during dry periods.

OUTDOORS

Plant out into growing site about 60cm (24") apart and 2cm (1") deeper than in seed bed when the plants are about 10-15cm (4-6") tall. Pick spears regularly from March to May the following year before the flowers open. Take out central spear first to encourage side shoots.

OUTDOORS
Sow thinly direct into the growing site 2cm deep in rows 30cm apart. If possible, sow carefully to prevent thinning. If you have to thin, do so in the evening after a good watering and remove all debris. Do not transplant. Aim for roots 4-6cm apart. Young carrots can be pulled alternately, so eat as you thin. Do not grow in freshly manured ground as this may cause the roots to fork.

Sow the seeds edgewise 1cm deep in individual pots under glass at a constant day and night temperature of 21 deg C. As soon as the seedlings have formed three true leaves transplant them into 15cm pots. When the plants are about 10cm tall, plant out in the growing site maintaining 21 deg C. Male flowers can appear under stress conditions and should be removed immediately. Cucumbers prefer a moist atmosphere; spray the floor of the glasshouse with water regularly to maintain humidity.

Sow the seeds thinly in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 2cm deep in short rows. Thin the seedlings to 4-5cm apart as they grow. When the seedlings are about the thickness of a pencil, they should be lifted and transplanted. Make a 15cm deep hole with a rod, trim off the ends of roots and leaves, drop into the hole and fill the hole with water. Do not fill the hole with soil. The length of the white stem can be increased by earthing up as the plant grows.
